Unmasking the Silent Thief of Youth and Energy in Women
The elusive "Fountain of Youth" is a tantalizing concept all women dream of.
We’ve all had those moments, looking in the mirror, wondering if there was a potion that could promise enduring youthfulness and grace just waiting to be found.
Scientists have scoured the Earth for natural age-defying wonders — supple skin, an agile mind, boundless energy.
They've come full circle back to a well-known friend: Vitamin D.
It's often called the 'sunshine vitamin' because it's what our bodies naturally produce when we bask in the sun's rays.
But here's the stark reality:
Despite the fortification of many processed foods with vitamin D, a staggering number of women are still falling short.
According to government estimates, a whopping 97% of women do not meet the estimated average requirement (EAR) of vitamin D from food and beverages alone.
This means that almost one in every two women is deficient in this essential nutrient.
Each one of our sisters, friends, or colleagues might be aging ahead of her time, without even knowing she is deficient in Vitamin D.
We shouldn't let that be our story, should we?
For women, especially those transitioning through perimenopause and menopause, this deficiency could mean additional challenges like: vaginal dryness, hot flashes, mood swings, (lower back pain, hair loss) and brittle bones.
The Vitamin D Deficiency Epidemic
Vitamin D is often hailed as a super nutrient and the best-kept secret for helping women stay young.
However, in recent years, women have been facing a silent epidemic: Vitamin D Deficiency.
It's a puzzle that has lingered in my mind for quite some time.
Despite Vitamin D's numerous benefits, many women are constantly coming up short.
Let's unravel the reasons behind this all-too-common shortfall.
Sun Protection Habits: SPF-rich sunscreens might be protecting your skin, but it is important to think about how they might be impacting the body’s Vitamin D creation.
Age-Related Factors: Especially if you're 50 or older, the odds of a Vitamin D Deficiency increase with each passing year.
Health and Surgical Factors: Ongoing health issues, especially those affecting fat absorption, or surgeries like gastric bypass can play a role in Vitamin D production.
Weight Considerations: Carrying extra weight can have an effect.
Indoor Preferences: Spending a lot of time indoors, or having a deeper skin complexion can all be factors.
Environmental Factors: Living in areas with little sunlight and frequent indoor activities can especially affect those with richer skin tones.
Lifestyle Choices: Desk jobs, wearing covering clothing, or a preference for indoor activities can influence your vitamin D levels.
Remember, this deficiency is more than just a number on a page. It's an unseen foe that saps your energy, robs you of your vitality and speeds up the aging process.
Common Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency
Most women grappling with chronic diseases are silently waging another battle: a deficiency in vitamin D, a nutrient essential for myriad bodily functions.
You see, you have vitamin D receptors all over your body — in the small intestine, large intestine, T and B lymphocytes, brain, mononuclear cells, and skin.
Vitamin D can have a strong potential influence within your body, akin to a master conductor ensuring every section of an orchestra resonates in harmony.
Vitamin D is also crucial for insulin production, immune function, bowel function. It even affects your hormones, brain, and heart muscle.
Why is Vitamin D so indispensable, especially as you age? Because when you're deficient, a range of symptoms can manifest like...
Leading to brain fog, atrophy, and forgetfulness.
Scientists believe vitamin D plays a role in breast cell growth.
Disrupting your body's natural harmony.
Affecting your intimate moments.
Turning peaceful nights elusive.
Draining your daily vitality.
Weakened Immune Response
Making infections frequent.
Affecting the quality of your life.
Interrupting your well-being.
Diminishing your inner joy.
Limiting your active lifestyle.
Pelvic Organ Prolapse
Diminishing your radiant confidence.
The emerging global vitamin D deficiency crisis is not just worrisome, but downright alarming.
It's a reality too significant to ignore, given the pivotal role of vitamin D in our health.
Why You Probably Aren’t Getting Enough Vitamin D
Here’s the thing. Other than processed foods that are fortified with vitamin D, there aren’t a whole lot of foods that are packed with vitamin D.
Sure, there’s cod liver oil, sardines, and beef liver, but most of us don’t regularly pile our plates sky-high with any of these foods.
So that brings us to the other way we get vitamin D — the sun.
When the sun hits your skin, an organic compound called 7-dehydrocholesterol absorbs UV B radiation and then it is converted to previtamin D3 which in turn isomerizes into vitamin D3
This process is your body’s primary source of vitamin D, but it can also spell serious danger for you.
Because even short amounts of sun time can put you at risk for exposure to UV radiation, which damages your skin.
UV radiation is considered a carcinogen, meaning it causes skin cancer.
Here’s the other problem with vitamin D synthesis from sun exposure…
Most of us don’t get outside enough even to trigger the synthesis process because we’re inside so much.
Then there’s the matter of cloudy days during the winter that don’t bring enough UV-B rays you need to make vitamin D.
Supplementation is undoubtedly the solution, but here's the catch: Your vitamin D levels might be coming up short, failing to provide the health benefits you need. And this shortfall has a compelling explanation.
The Vitamin D Showdown: D2 vs. D3
As a specialist in women's health who has worked with over 20,000 women in my clinic in NYC, I've uncovered a concerning truth about many vitamin D supplements on the market today.
If you're taking vitamin D, it's vital to understand this…there are two kinds of vitamin D: D2 and D3.
The two basic types of vitamin D are D3 (cholecalciferol) and D2 (ergocalciferol).
D3 is the type that is made in your body and found in certain foods.
It is considered a much more “active” form of vitamin D, meaning your body can use it better and it actually contributes to raising the levels of vitamin D found in your body.
But a lot of the manufacturers out there cut corners and fill their supplements with the far less superior D2, because it’s less expensive to manufacture.
D2 simply isn’t as effective at raising your vitamin D blood levels as D3. And isn’t that the point of taking a vitamin D supplement?
When choosing a Vitamin D supplement, it's vital to know which form of the vitamin you're taking.
For women seeking optimal benefits, Vitamin D3 is often considered the gold standard, especially when combined with Vitamins K1 and K2.
The Vitamin K Problem
Did you know that consuming vitamin D without vitamin K can put you at risk for increasing calcium in your blood?
Yep, vitamins D and K are both fat-soluble vitamins that play a central role in how your body metabolizes calcium. Vitamin D promotes the production of vitamin K-dependent proteins, which require vitamin K for carboxylation.
That means that when you supplement with vitamin D without the addition of vitamin K… calcium can build up in your blood and potentially increase your blood pressure. Yikes!
Vitamin K is diverse, a cluster of compounds deeply interwoven with our health since the 20th century.
Vitamin K1 (Phylloquinone): The Green Goddess
Sitting prominently in leafy greens, K1 dominates the vitamin K spectrum for many women:
Blood Clotting: Supports normal clotting processes.
Antioxidant Action: A potential shield against early aging signs.
Brain Boost: Plays a role in cognitive support.
Nerve Cell Care: Supports neuronal health.
Inflammation Defender: Known for its anti-inflammatory-like effects.
Vitamin K2 (Menaquinone): The Fermented Charm
Found in fermented delights and specific meats, K2 also owes its existence to our gut bacteria. Its benefits extend to:
Heart Health: Ensures proper calcium utilization, potentially guarding arteries.
Bone Health: Promotes calcium absorption, fortifying bones.
Brain Health: May support cognitive health with aging.
